Review: Flipboard for iPad

Flipboard enables you to view, in a magazine-style format, your Twitter and Facebook feeds. Here is why this is different, worth paying attention to:
  • You can put Twitter lists, search terms, or individuals into their own sections and view these streams. While Tweetdeck, and others, achieve the same results via columns the Flipboard experience is better.
  • As you dive into the sections you have defined you see a mix of individual tweets and, the real win, you see the articles that people were tweeting. You no longer need to click upon random URLs to decide if you want to view the content. Instead, the graphics and text of the original article are right there in front of you. Not happy with seeing the page rendered in Flipboard, just click “Read on Web” and you are off into the browser to view it directly on the original site.
  • You can see who else has retweeted the article and choose to follow, if desired, as well as reply, RT, or share the article via e-mail.

On the main screen of Flipboard, you have 9 different feeds with one Facebook account and one personal Twitter account. However, you can delete any of the account feeds and replace with your own favorites.

Review: iPhone 4 Case (Cygnett Snaps Duo)

  1. Yesterday, I purchased a "Snaps Duo" - Silicon frames for iPhone 4 from Cygnett.
  2. Price: RM 129
  3. Shop: Macstudio, Low Yat Plaza
  4. It came with 2 silicon frames of different colors. One of the main color is always black, whereas the other can be either Grey, Blue, Red, Orange etc. I bought the Black and Grey colored frames.
  5. Its easy to slip the iPhone 4 into the frame but I felt quite "odd" holding it without a full case (just like the 3G or 3GS)
  6. However, it does expose the original design of the iPhone 4 but still protect the iPhone against any bumps and drops.
  7. There is also the front and back screen protector but I did not use them.

Review: My First Facetime Call Experience

  1. I think the Facetime will be one the key features of iPhone thats gonna be a hit.
  2. Successfully made a Facetime call from my house using WiFi over Streamyx (ADSL) and a colleague using WiFi over UniFi (Telekom Malaysia's new High Speed Broadbadnd using Fiber)
  3. The quality is quite good and the voice quality is excellent (no lag)
  4. Both cameras played a significant role in making the conversation a worthwhile experience. Its fun to switch the camera back and forth to show around the places. It will be a better hit if it can operate over 3G!
  5. The ability to move around the owner's display anywhere around the screen is also cool.
  6. What's more interesting is like you are are really having a conversation with eye-to-eye contact unlike the way you communicate over a video conferencing desktop camera.

NOTE: Received my iPhone 4 on Aug 25, 2010.

  1. I purchased my iPad on April 15, 2010 in Taiwan.
  2. It seems that 11 pages are not enough. How I wish that the iPad 3.2 have the "Folder" features like the iOS 4.0.
  3. My favorite frequent apps are listed in the first few pages. And my favorite Game is "Angry Birds".
  4. You can read more of the review below:

Review: iPad - After More than 100 Days

In my previous post, "Review: What is it like after 2 months owning an iPad", I think I have changed my usage ways.

Here's some questions which I saw someone posted on the Internet. Let me answer that:-

  1. So? Answer: Life has never been better with this new kid on my block... :p
  2. So is the battery life ok for you? Answer: The battery life is awesome! It lasts more than 10 hours. In fact, my daily usage rarely require me to recharge the battery and I can leave it overnight.
  3. So is it heavy or awkward to hold on to when you are in full couch-potato slouch? Answer: Its not really heavy because I will normally place the iPad on my lap while browsing.
  4. So does it get hot in your hands when using it for, say, more than an hour? Answer: None at all. Furthermore, I have a Yoobao Case covering the iPad.
  5. So have you tried reading PDF files on it? Answer: Yes - I used either GoodReader, iBook or iAnnotate to read the PDF files.
  6. So can you zoom in and out on PDF files? Answer: Definitely!
  7. So how is it for reading other eBooks on it? Answer: One word - Awesome!
  8. So if you find a video on the internet that you want to download so that you can watch it later, can you do that easily? Answer: Normally, I will either download an .mp4 movies or convert the .avi or any other format to Apple-compatible format (.mp4) and Sync via iTunes.
  9. Likewise, if you find, say, a PDF document or other file on the internet, can you download that directly to the iPad for later viewing? Answer: Yes, we can either download it and Open the PDF file using the PDF reader apps or we can Sync the PDF files via iTunes.
  10. So if a friend gave you a USB stick with a cool video or PDF file or pictures on it, how do you get those onto the iPad? Answer: Sync via iTunes
  11. So when you play MP3 files, does it play them in order and does it remember the last file played if you turn of the iPad and restart it later? Answer: It will remember the last file played.
  12. So how many people have seen you with it and asked about it? Answer: Many - and I have even appeared in a TV Show (TV9)!
  13. So would you prefer to have had an Android or Windows-based operating system? Answer: None. I am now a hard-core fan of iPad!

Review - My Yoobao iPad Case

  1. I have been searching high and low for the best iPad case.
  2. Finally I decided to get Yoobao V2 from eBay. The seller seems genuine enough.
  3. I have never purchased anything from eBay, but my previous and first experience in getting an STM XS Scout iPad Bag from Amazon encourage me to buy from online again.
  4. The Yoobao iPad Case which I ordered from eBay arrived today (almost 10 days).

Review: What is it like after 2 months owning an iPad?

Since its official release date on April 3, 2010 (WiFi version), the iPad had received numerous reviews - both good and bad. Many Forums received repeated questions such as should I buy the iPad or not, Macbook Air or iPad, iPad 3G or WiFi, etc.

Many early adopters just cannot wait to own an iPad because Apple release the official iPad only in certain selected countries. Singapore will get their sometime in July 2010 but nowhere in the time frame mentioned about Malaysia.

Personally, I managed to purchase the iPad when I was in Taiwan and ggot it after 2 weeks of its official release. Malaysians also can buy their iPad at some shops especially at Low Yat Plaza or even in some of the Net Forums like Low Yat Net. But the cost is still way too high as compared to the price which was released in USA. Its the price that early adopters need to pay - premium. The advantage is that these users have early experience of using an iPad. It certainly attracts other users in envy.

In my earlier posts (After 1 month), I have indicated how I am going to use the iPad in my daily life. That was quite sometime ago. Okay - what is like after 2 months of using that "awesome" device?

Honestly, not all the things which I wished earlier became true in my daily usage. It needs discipline to make the iPad as your daily companion. So - what are my common applications which I used daily? They are:-

1 - Safari Browser - I used this quite a lot to browse the Net for more information. The ease of browsing is the key factor and I used this almost 80% of my usage time.
2 - Facebook client - Although iPad doesn't have a native application yet, it is still my favorite social networking client. Since I have Jailbreak the iPad, I can "force" the FB client to be like a "native iPad" app (unlike the 2x feature).
3 - Twitter Client - another past time of mine.
4 - ToDo - This app helps to manage my daily Things To Do. Excellent utility to remind me of TTD.
5 - BlogPress - excellent way to update my Blog.

Although I have purchased apps like Goodreader, DocsToGo, iAnnotate PDF, My Library etc. I still don't find the time to use them to the fullest.

The question remained - Are you a Consumer or Creator of contents? For most people, iPad are meant for people who consumed information a LOT more than creating contents. A laptop/notebook/desktop like the Macbook are great in creating contents e.g. word processing, powerpoint, spreadsheet, photo or movie editing etc.

Looking at the usage above, I am still a "Consumer" of information... :-)

Review: STM Scout XS

Received my iPad bag today from STM Bag. Ordered this from Amazon which is shipped on June 2. The parcel actually arrived on June 11 but unable to deliver since there is no one at home to accept.

Picked up the bag at the Post Office.

Quite a small bag with the size 10".

It can fit both the iPad and Apple Wireless Keyboard nicely and snuggly. It got enough padding to ensure the iPad is safe from any knocks.

Even tho' it can be seen like keyboard slightly portrude, however, when it is tucked with the bag's flap, it looks quite fitting.

Review: I Am A Student - Is It Worth To Buy an iPad?

This is quite a common question in a lot of Forums.
Personally, I would say - "NO". Reason being, most of the time, these students are trying to justify buying an iPad because they actually love to watch movies, play games, browsing the Net. But they tend to justify by saying "I want to read e-books", "I can write and jot down my ideas and lecture notes", "I can find research materials easily".... BUT its it REALLY TRUE?

How many of them "really" do all that productivity stuff?
Having an iPad and using it really needs a "discipline" ... otherwise, you will be drag to non-productive activities such as watching movies, listening music, playing games, chatting, Facebooking, browsing the Net unproductively.

Malaysians have yet to be familiarize themselves using computer or netbook to complement a lot of the educational activities. Most lectures are conducted using the traditional pen and paper and whiteboard. Unless all of the lectures are using digital, its quite difficult to adapt to these kinds of devices.

I would suggest buy a Laptop rather than buy an iPad unless you have already owned a Laptop and also a filthy rich student.
