iPhone FaceTime Problems (Facetime Button Missing)

FaceTime is not working. What has happened? I have been searching numerous places but very few people talk about the missing FaceTime setting. Heres what I have consolidated.

1. Check your FaceTime setting
Go to Settings > Phone and verify your FaceTime is ON.

If your FaceTime setting is missing, I am guessing that you have just jailbroken your phone. FaceTime will have problem working properly after you have jail broken. (Read more here). Do a Cydia update of the "Base Structure" package and the setting should appear after a reboot.

2. Check you are on WIFI
You should be on WIFI for the FaceTime to work. If you do not mind playing a small fee, my other post will share how to make FaceTime work on 3G.

3. Check your calling party is on iPhone 4
The person you are calling should also be on iPhone 4 with WIFI.

HOW-TO: Avoid FACETIME iPhone 4 Waiting for Activation Error

It was earlier reported that most owners who have problem with "Waiting Activation Error" either because the devices are new (as compared to others who bought much earlier) or they have updated the "Carrier" during the Restore or Upgrade firmware process.

I suspected its due to "Carrier Update" because I encountered this message earlier today when I attempted to upgrade my Firmware to 4.2.1 but I chose to ignore. However, it proved to be wise because when I tested Facetime - it works!

I heard some iphone owners (Celcom customers) who chose to upgrade their "Carrier" is unable to get their Facetime feature back.

FACETIME iPhone 4 - Waiting for Activation Error

  • It seems quite a number of users a facing this problem.
  • In Malaysia, there are many cases especially for Celcom subscribers. Officially - only Maxis and Digi are selling iPhone 4. Celcom has yet to officially launch their iPhone 4.
  • My theory for those who are not able to get their Facetime activated is probably either due to the SMSC is unable to send the activation code to the users or Celcom is intentionally blocked this activation for the time being.
  • Blocking Facetime activation is a way to deter customers from buying Celcom's competitors iPhone 4.
  • That's my 2 cents worth of theory.
  • I purchased the iPhone 4 months ago and have no problem activating Facetime on my Celcom line. I think this problem just recently occurred for the new users.

Facetime being Blocked Behind Corporate Firewalls

  1. I have not been able to connect successfully using Facetime over my corporate WiFi network.
  2. We have even tried having both Facetime users connected on the same WiFi AP but still unsuccessful.
  3. You will always encounter a "Connecting" message and then, the call will be dropped.
  4. Then, I realize, its probably the Port Blocking issues.
  5. Here's an article from Apple --> iPhone 4: Using Facetime behind a firewall.

Review: My First Facetime Call Experience

  1. I think the Facetime will be one the key features of iPhone thats gonna be a hit.
  2. Successfully made a Facetime call from my house using WiFi over Streamyx (ADSL) and a colleague using WiFi over UniFi (Telekom Malaysia's new High Speed Broadbadnd using Fiber)
  3. The quality is quite good and the voice quality is excellent (no lag)
  4. Both cameras played a significant role in making the conversation a worthwhile experience. Its fun to switch the camera back and forth to show around the places. It will be a better hit if it can operate over 3G!
  5. The ability to move around the owner's display anywhere around the screen is also cool.
  6. What's more interesting is like you are are really having a conversation with eye-to-eye contact unlike the way you communicate over a video conferencing desktop camera.

NOTE: Received my iPhone 4 on Aug 25, 2010.
