Apple vs Google. "Closed" vs "Open".

Steve & Apple Inc.Image by marcopako  via Flickr

I hate when some people give name calling to companies like Apple. Below is my respond to one of the Forum post in Low Yat Net.
This is also a continuation of my article posted regarding "Are you an Android or iOS Fan?"

------------------------------------------------------

Both Apple and Google have to different business strategy.
You cannot simply start calling names Apple as "n00bs" market segment or "kiddie toys" when you don't know how much Apple is worth as a Company nowadays.

Google makes money out of its advertising business. Thus, data, information and knowledge is very important for them. Google is not in the business of hardware like Apple. That's why they gave out Android almost for free (or totally free probably) to handset makers. Google is very clever in trying to make all smartphones to have Android. When people use their device, they will capture the user profile. Smartphones are more personal than normal desktops. Thus, usage of smartphones can be leverage by Google for Advertisements. Users are being profiled this way.

Now Google is moving another step further into the realm of "Internet of Things" or IoT. Why Google is interested in this? My personal opinion is that they would like to capture the profile of "Things" such as Fridge, Cars, Electrical appliances etc. These "things" will have sensors that sends out data. And this data is what Google is interested. In future, Google will exactly know what devices or "things" in your house and what are your buying preferences (brands, types etc).

But Apple Inc, is not trying to capture this market. They have tried to open their Macintosh OS to other hardware players previously but it failed. To understand why Apple have a "closed" system is to understand Apple history and how Steve Jobs built the Company. This is a long story and I suggest read the latest "Steve Jobs" book. But to make it short, Steve wanted to make his product a perfect product and closed. That's why people even have difficulty to open up Apple products without a proper tool (Apple even design a special screwdriver to open up their product). They don't even allow user to change the iPhone battery so easily! (Take a look at Samsung phone - see how many people in the Forum is trying to buy spare batteries!!).

Steve Jobs is meticulous in designing Apple products. Before Steve joined back Apple, the company has so many products that they need a Chart to show the product line. Steve terminated so many and finally chose a few to continue. Apple iOS is closed and they never allow users to mod it. But the hackers are always 1-step ahead of Apple. This cat-and-mouse game of Jailbreaking will always continue but that's what excite some of the users.

But why Apple chose a "closed" system as their business strategy? Apple not only in the software business but also in hardware business (unlike Google). Thus, selling hardware is also their main business and the only way is to ensure they control the Quality of their products is to have a "closed" system. Apple has Millions of users even before they launched iPhones. iPods and iTunes are the beginning of their Apple eco-system - now they have entered the music industry with iTunes and iPods/iPod Touch, TV industry with their Apple TV, phone industry with their iPhones, Games and Media industry with their iPads, Computing industry with their Macs and Cloud business with their iCloud.
As for the "closed eco-system" users, they will benefit from high quality and seamless usage experience (if you were to choose all products from Apple). What's more important for these kind of users are productivity and change the world with Apple products. Unlike most Android users who always "kill their time" with "modding" their gadgets but not doing so much about productivity (my personal opinion when reading the Forum posts).

Thus - Apple is not a eyeing a "n00b" market segment and neither its iPhone is a "kiddie" toy.
Learn more about both Companies and you will respect both of them. Its either you are in the "open" market segment or "closed" market" segment.

Its either you love it or hate it.

Apple's Lion To Launch On Wed. July 6, 2011 ?

Bad news for those like me who’s waiting for Apple OS X Lion to be launch on July 1, 2011.
Most likely, according to rumours, it will be July 6, 2011 (Wednesday)

Source from
T-GAAP.

“We’ve just received word from our source in the San Francisco Bay Area that Apple is planning to release Mac OS X 10.7 Lion on Wednesday, July 6th at 9:00 am Pacific Time.
One particular item of interest about this news is that with OS X Lion being an online-release-only, Apple can wait until the 11th hour to release new OS. They don't have to first lock it down, then press it onto DVDs, then box it, then ship to their hundreds of stores and through distribution in order to meet a certain publicly announced launch date. With an online release, Apple just needs to upload the final release to their servers and then make it available.”

UPDATE (Jul 3, 2011)
According to 9to5Mac, reliable sources said the Release of Lion might be July 14, 2011.

Revealed - iCloud Features

iCloud-2011-06-7-07-15.png

[SOURCE:
Redmond Pie]

Features
iCloud includes features that were previously available in MobileMe, as well as others we’re just finding out about now. They include:
icloud_music-2011-06-7-07-15.jpg
Online Apps: many of iCloud’s features have roots in MobileMe, such as online Contacts and Mail Apps, which have been written from scratch, since according to Jobs, they the company has "learned a lot" since it built MobileMe.
Heavily Enhanced Syncing: back in the MobileMe days, syncing was merely limited to e-mail and contacts. With iCloud, important files, such as documents and pictures, can be synced across different devices. In addition, iWork users will be able to edit documents over this service and see the changes in real time, even between a Mac and an iPad, for example. That’s unheard of on other Office suites. The same happens with photos, which can be streamed to any device on the fly. Similarly to what happened before, information that’s added or modified on one device will be immediately pushed down to the remaining devices.
Backup: iCloud will allow data such as settings, books, pictures, video and even Apps to be backed up and show up across all your devices. That will eliminate the need for huge set ups during system reinstalls, for example.
iTunes in Cloud (Your Music Locker): this service allows any newly purchased content, such as songs, Apps or iBooks, to be automatically synced over the air to up to 10 devices. For already purchased content, users will have the option to download each song, App or book individually.
itunes_golden_ticket-2011-06-7-07-15.jpg

Availability
iCloud and all its features will be available this fall, although there’s no release date set as of yet. Developers can try out iCloud starting from today.
Probably the most surprising fact about this service is it’s price, or lack of it:  iCloud is completely free. There’s a 5GB limit, although purchased items and Photo Stream won’t add to it.

To Be Unveiled - iOS 5, Mac OS Lion and iCloud - WWDC 2011 June 6, 2011

Here’s what people have predicted and will come true.

In a press, release, Apple confirmed that an iCloud service will be unveiled at WWDC on Monday, June 6th, as well as iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion, Apple’s next-generation computer operating system. Too bad... no new iPhone hardware is going to be announced this time around.

Apple-logo-2011-06-3-08-12.jpeg
“Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.”

The press release also revealed that Steve Jobs, who stepped aside in January in order to "focus on his health", will be giving keynote address at the said event. While he made an appearance at the company’s iPad 2 unveiling two months later, many didn’t expect him to appear at a faster-paced and way more crowded conference like WWDC.

Here’s what you have been waiting for! iOS Most wanted features..
Apple might raise curtains off iOS 5.0 at its yearly developer conference WWDC 2011, and if sources are to be believed, Apple is going to bring the next cycle of iOS along with the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 in 2012?

Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.
Apple’s apparent focus on
software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.”

  • Thus, this news crushed all hopes for the iPhone fans to get their hands on iPhone 5 this June.
  • If there is no news regarding manufacturing of its parts, we will not be seeing it even the end of this year. Most probably sometime next year (2012).
  • It’s either Apple is cooking up a much better features for the iPhone 5 or trying to resolve the manufacturing issues.
  • Either way, I am also quite disappointed. I was really hoping to get Apple new gadget this year (since I am not getting the iPad 2).
  • What about you, guys? Disappointed too?

Macbook Air vs iPad 2

iPad-2-vs-MacBook-Air-1-2011-03-19-10-25.jpgiPad-2-vs-MacBook-Air-2-2011-03-19-10-25.jpg

  • iPad 2 has a thickness of 8.8mm (thinner than iPhone 4) whereas the Macbook Air is 17 mm at its thickest, and 2.8mm at its thinnest.
  • It looks like the Air is much thinner.
  • Which one will you carry around? As for me - I carry around my MBA at the office/home and my iPad 1 is mainly at home or during my travel (outside office) or vacation. Of course I need to carry my iPhone 4 (since my iPad is WiFi only)
  • MBA can do a lot more for my work as compared to iPad. Nothing can replace the Powerpoint, Word, Photoshop, Emailing, Surfing.
  • But the iPad excel in other ways - light browsing, digital newspaper, ebook reading, gaming, watching videos...
  • I used to list down 13 reasons why I like my iPad. I tried to purchase a lot of Productivity Apps after a month of usage thinking it can "really" increase my daily productivity.
  • After 2 months of usage, I tried downloading several apps that can read PDF files to make my life easier reading eBooks. But it still failed to change my reading lifestyle.
  • I heard a lot of students trying to justify their iPad purchase without knowing the long term impact to their study habits.
  • I began to find my natural ways of using the iPad after 100 days.
  • Nowadays (i.e. after 1 year using iPad), I think the best iPad app for me would be Flipboard. This is my Digital Newspaper and my reading material at home.

  • If you dare to place your expensive iPad 2 on your fridge, so be it! ;-)
  • But it seems people love to use their device in innovative ways.
  • Maybe its a good companion for people cooks (checking latest menus) or playing favorite videos or music while at the kitchen.
  • But beware if you have small kids running around the kitchen!!

Why I Don't Need the iPad 2...

  • You might want to ask this question yourself - if I already have the first generation iPad, do I need to upgrade and get the new iPad 2 which is expected to be launch in March 2, 2011?
  • Personally my answer would be a "NO".... Why?
  • I can be proudly considered myself as one of the earliest iPad owner (bought it in April 15, 2010). The ways I use my iPad have changed in the early months. From the first month, second month and third month. I have Jailbroken it several times. Purchased several accessories for it including a wireless keyboard and the camera connection kit.
  • But somehow, things have changed drastically when I bought the latest Macbook Air which arrived Nov. 4, 2010. The size, weight and power of MBA attracted me so much that I have used the MBA more often and less on my iPad.
  • It seems that all the things which I did on my iPad can be done better on my MBA!! I rarely bring along my iPad to office since its proved not to be the best device for office work. My iPhone is sufficient to cater my iPad needs at office. At work and home, my MBA is my new "best friend".
  • Thus, when rumors mentioned about the latest iPad 2 with its new specs,  somehow it didn't excite me (like it used to excite me every time Apple launch a new product). For an Apple Fanboy, its weird eh?
  • However, let's see in March 2 when Apple reveal the iPad 2 and see whether if there is truly a new breakthrough technology. Apple fans are also quite disappointed with the recent release of Macbook Pros. Hope, Steve Jobs will not disappoint the fans again...

2011 New Macbook Pro Launched Today - Feb. 24, 2011

  • Apple silently launched the latest Macbook Pro today via its Online Store.
  • All-new quad-core processors. Thunderbolt technology. The FaceTime HD camera. MacBook Pro has more than its share of innovations
  • It brings quite a number of negative comments since some felt it's not a big breakthrough. Gizmodo published an article "Why the new MBPs are not for most People".
  • As for me, I need a bigger screen but very light and have bigger SSD storage packaged in an affordable price.

  • Engadget has posted a video displaying the speed of transferring data.
